Parents need to determine when paper and pencil is the best choice for a child’s storytelling and when a laptop can be used. Parental oversight is always needed especially with any typing and at what age. Will the parent do the typing?
Children should primarily create stories on paper during their early developmental years (pre-K through elementary school) to build foundational literacy and fine motor skills. The computer should be introduced later (around middle school) for its editing benefits and to develop digital literacy, ideally after a solid handwriting foundation is established.
Introducing computers for writing is most effective once a child has developed a degree of handwriting fluency and can focus on idea formation rather than the mechanics of writing.
